Goliath Grouper
Acrylic on Canvas
24" high x 36" wide
The Goliath Grouper I photographed for reference
material that I used for this painting resides in the Bermuda Aquarium,
Museum and Zoo, located in Hamilton Bermuda. His massive size,
protruding lower jaw and quiet still demeanor fascinated me as I observed
him quietly resting in the water. The Goliath Grouper is the largest
member of the Sea Bass family. Generally this sluggish giant is
found near shore, in deep holes or on ledges. These fish can attain
a length of eight feet, weigh up to 800 pounds and have a life span of 30
to 50 years, feeding on crustaceans, lobsters, stingrays, turtles and
other small fish. The Goliath Grouper is critically endangered due
to over fishing and loss of habitat.
